Imphal, September 20:
To help the fishing community of Manipur, particularly fishermen who eke out a living from the catches of Loktak lake, the Manipur Science and Technology Council has designed new fishing crafts and gears.
However the fishermen are not fully satisfied with the new products and opined that they may need some modifications and adjustment for the water of Loktak Lake.
The new fishing gears and equipments were produced by MASTEC under the scheme, Survey and Modernisation of the Traditional Fishing Crafts and Gears in the Lakes and Wetlands of Manipur, Phase II".
The scheme is sponsored by the Government of India.
To introduce the new designs to the fishermen, scientists of MASTEC interacted with fishermen at office of the Morning Star Association at Thanga Khunjem village today.
The new fishing equipments were put to test at Loktak during the interaction programme.
Fishermen who tested the new models however said that some modifications may be needed.
They opined that the new model is too light and will not be suitable for the water of Loktak lake.
