Major poppy destruction drive held

Imphal, November 09 2014:
Government agencies carried out a joint operation on November 7 at Lamkang Khunao village, Khunjai Ridge to destroy illicit poppy cultivation with 20 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector under the aegis of Hqs IGAR (S) providing incidental security to the Government officials conducting the operation.
A joint team of NBC, NAB, Forest Department, Exercise and Taxation Department and Manipur police destroyed an 88 acre of poppy cultivation with an estimated yield of 1760 kg worth Rs 14.08 crore (approximately) in illicit market by burning the whole field down.
Poppy are used for extracting morphine to make heroin base which would be refined into brown sugar and heroin No 4 .
The money generated through this cultivation are used for funding and arming various Indian insurgent groups to destroy the tranquility of the region, a statement issued by IGAR (S) PRO informed.
