MALA celebrates

Manipur Library Association (MALA) celebrated its 27th Foundation Day along with holding the 2nd Nongmeikapam Gopal Memorial Singh Memorial Lecture at MDU hall today.
Uripok AC MLA L Nandakumar and MALA president L Sabita graced the function as chief guest and president respectively.
Keishamthong AC MLA L Ibomcha, Art and Culture Commissioner RK Nimai also attended the function as guests of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, L Nandakumar expressed his desire to revitalise the library movement which was started in Manipur before World War-II .
L Ibomcha while speaking at the function expressed concern over Government's alleged negligence to demand for enactment of a Library Act.
He opined that giving space for Thoubal parking in front of Central Library is an improper arrangement.
The noise created by buses and commuters disturb library visitors, he said and added that number of visitors is considerably decreasing as the library does not have enough up-to-date books.
Contending that instituting good libraries would help build strong future pillars of the society, Ibomcha stressed on the need to start a movement for implementation of the Library Act.
Dr RK Nimai said that people have now forgotten the habit of reading books in the library.
Students do not have even leisure time as they are kept busy with tuitions, he added.
In his keynote address, K Chaoba said that many students and even outsiders visit the library of Manipur University.
Saying that MU library has many good books including those related to Civil Service examination, K Chaoba said that Central Library is lagging behind in terms of number of good and upto-date books.
