Imphal, May 24 2014 :
Imphal-Jiribam highway (NH-37) which is under BRO's care for decades has seen a slight improvement but the overall condition of the highway still remains deplorable.
The 222 Kms long highway has improved slightly as a result of BRO's round the year repairing but it is feared that the highway would be reduced to its pitiable former self once the rainy season sets in, informed a source.
Notably, Governor VK Duggal issued strong instruction to BRO sometime back to speed up the highway development work and assign diligent and capable officers at the work site.
Nonetheless, a report sent by BRO to the State Government claimed that the highway has improved to some extent and there is a stretch of just 5 Kms which is still in worst condition.
The section from Awangkhul to Irang still lies in the most pathetic condition.
Bridges constructed between Barak and Sibilong are in bad shape and all the approach roads are in shambles.
Condition of the road near Makru bridge is quite deplorable and all the approach roads leading to bridges constructed beyond Makru bridge are anything but roads.
It is also said that the monitoring committee constituted at the instruction of the High Court has inspected condition of the highway.
Work progress and condition of the highway was inspected by the committee on May 5 and 6 .
Meanwhile, the Governor has sought status reports from relevant authorities about Imphal-Jiribam highway, Jiri-Tupul-Imphal railway, 400 KV power transmission line from Jiribam to Imphal and the Integrated Check Post, Moreh.
