The MLA said that due to imbalances in the ecological equilibrium, scores of plants, trees, animals, birds and insects are on the verge of extinction.
Targeted efforts to address this problem is the need of the hour, he added.
Instead of merely teaching students about endangered species and deteriorating environment, there is a need for a more practical approach, Paonam Brojen stated, adding that students should be shown the poor state of things directly.
The MLA further called for preservation of endangered species of plants and animals so that future generations may inherit a better world.
Dr N Shovarani, Assistant Professor, Environment Department, YK College, Wangjing stressed on the importance of National Endangered Species Day stating that many trees native to Manipur have become extinct and various animals and birds are tethering on the brink of extinction.
Under such circumstances, students need to be made aware of the endangered species and the measures required to save them.
With this goal in mind, the day's event had been organised, she added.
Dr S Giri also pointed out the importance of planting endangered trees to increase their numbers.
An exhibition consisting of 29 stalls displaying endangered species was also conducted as a part of the day's event.
