National Endangered Species Day observed

Environment Club of Yangambam Kumar (YK) College, Wangjing observed National Endangered Species Day at its hall on Friday with Wangjing Tentha MLA Paonam Brojen as chief guest, YK College Wangjing principal Dr S Giri as president and Manipur University Department of Zoology professor Th Binoi as guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Paonam Brojen praised the Environment Club for observing National Endangered Species Day saying it will inspire the students to be proactive in protecting the environment and wildlife.
He also emphasised on taking up conservation effort for wildlife as their extinction will have profound effect on human being while stressing that students should be made acquainted about environmental degradation by directly seeing it instead of learning it through books.
The MLA said that sustainable development should be the responsibility of all through protecting the nature.
Delivering the keynote speech, YK College Environment Department assistant professor Dr N Shovarani stated that May 20 is observed as National Endangered Species Day to highlight the need for their conservation and importance of public support in the effort.
Presently, in Manipur also there are many plants and trees that can be found in names only.
There is also likelihood of several species of state's wildlife going extinct.
Hence, the observance has been organised to create awareness on such endangered species amongst students and encourage them to participate in their conservation, she further conveyed.
As part of the observance, an exhibition on endangered species of the state was organised with 29 stalls opened by students of various educational institutions where posters, models, specimens, maps, charts, etc., of such species were put on display.
