Dy CM launches handloom project

Imphal, June 19 2015 : A new project of e-monitoring, skill development and cluster development of handloom taken up under the Ministry of Textiles was launched today by Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam.

Speaking at the project launching function held at Ningthoukhong Model High School under the aegis of Department of Commerce and Industries, Gaikhangam exuded confidence that the handloom project can generate a reliable source of income for womenfolk of Manipur.

The function was attended by a large number of women weavers coming from six Assembly segments of Bishnupur district.

Gaikhangam remarked that Commerce and Industries Department has been transformed into a thriving and prospective department after a man who has a fair knowledge of industries took the helm of affairs.

On account of limited knowledge about raw materials and other essential components, several crores have been wasted in setting up non-feasible industries like Khandsari Sugar Factory, Loitang Khunou Spinning Mill etc.

Now it has been learnt that micro and small industries based on horticulture and forestry would be sustainable and profitable in Manipur.

Manipur has enough potential to take handloom products.

There are more than two lakh handloom weavers and a little over one lakh looms in Manipur, Gaikhangam stated.

He also expressed keen desire for the weavers to be innovative so that their products can find ready markets abroad.

He then called upon all the weavers to preserve unique indigenous textile motifs and designs of Manipur and also to manufacture products of highest quality so as to enhance the State's resources.

On account of the presence of a stable Government in the State since the past 13 years, substantial changes have been seen in both the hills and the valley.

The June 18 event was an outcome of the absence of a stable Government.

Confiding that the ADC results were not satisfactory, the Deputy Chief Minister called upon all the people to be always on guard against divisive forces.

Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthou-jam stated that Manipur occupies third position in handloom sector in the whole country.

In terms of ratio between the total population and number of weavers, Manipur occupies top position among all the States of India.

E-monitoring system has been specifically launched to ensure that all the funds released by the Government of India for weavers reach them directly.

In order to ensure proper utilization of loans/grants and effective operation of the 51 registered handloom clusters of Manipur, the North Eastern Council (NEC) has developed a new software.

Essential equipment have also been procured through MANITRON and due trial has been conducted successfully.

The handloom project launched today has such components like construction of work sheds, installation of solar home lighting system etc.

Govindas also called upon the gathering to work hard and enhance economic activity instead of wasting time.

MLAs N Loken, Dr I Ibohalbi and top ranking officials of Commerce and Industries Department were also present at the function.
