Imphal, April 21:
A housewife identified as Shamjetsabam (O) Premila (26) w/o Malemnganba of Leimaram Mamang Leikai in Bishnupur district and her new born daughter perished this evening amid contradictory claims of the patient's party and authorities of RIMS Hospital.
According to S Ragini mother-in-law of the deceased woman her grand-daughter was delivered at about 3.45 pm with the doctor concerned conveying to the patient party of the delivery being 'normal'.
However, minutes after the delivery as the mother bled excessively she was rolled back to the delivery room after which medical personnel attending her informed that more blood would be required for surgery to remove the woman's womb to avoid further complication.
Even as the husband responded to the intimation and reportedly informed other possible donors, Premila was announced 'dead' some four hours later, leading to an uneasy situation in the hospital (maternity ward) with the doctors suddenly seen nowhere but interestingly witnessing presence of substantial security personnel.
When approached Medical Superintendent of the hospital Dr Y Mohen opined that doctor/s concerned need not be blamed for the twin deaths as the delivery was normal with the bleeding reported late in the evening.
He described the incident as unfortunate.
In the meantime, Imphal West Superintendent of Police arrived with additional force as pre-emptive measure to avoid violent reaction from the patient party.
According to Ragini, Premila during her pregnancy days was constantly in touch with the doctor including adhering to instruction for pre-delivery medication and regular medical check-ups.
Significantly, when Premila reported to the hospital on April 19, she was asked to return home due to non-availability of bed in maternity ward.
