Imphal, December 05 2014 :
A joint meeting of Kuki chiefs of Manipur was called on Tuesday by the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) at TRI Auditorium.
About 300 chiefs of major Kuki villages attended the meeting in response to the call of KIM.
The meeting discussed many important issues relating to the prevailing socio-political conditions faced by the Kuki people.
The State Government's authoritarian or hegemonistic policies vis a vis the Kuki people prompted the KIM to call the meeting.
The State Government's constant plan to impose the Village Authority Act or its amendments has led the Kuki chiefs to harbor a feeling of distrust on
the Government.
The Village Authority Act in all its forms is in total contrast to the traditional Kuki chieftainship form of village administration.
The Village Authority Act in the first place was passed by the State Government without the approval and consent of the Kuki people, KIM alleged in a statement.
The meeting discussed the Government's recent plan to amend the Village Authority Act and has adopted a resolution to oppose the same initiative.
The Kuki Inpi and the chiefs have unanimously resolved to oppose the Village Authority Act Amendment Bill.
The Kuki chiefs and the Kuki Inpi regard this Bill as unacceptable.
The Kuki Inpi is peeved that the Government in total contravention of the Kuki people's tradition and custom has many a time tried to impose laws and rules against the will of the Kuki people, added the statement.
The meeting also resolved to hold another meeting of Kuki chiefs to improvise or reform the village administration of the Kukis for which the Kuki Inpi Manipur has been entrusted with the responsibility of organizing it, the statement added.
