The High Court Bar Association of Manipur has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding increase in number of Judges of High Court of Manipur.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Court complex, association president Senior Advocate L Shyamkishore said that speedy trial and delivering justice are greatly hampered by inadequate number of Judges in the High Court.
The Court currently has only three Judges including the Chief Justice, he added.
Considering the number of pending cases, the High Court of Manipur needs at least five Judges, L Shyamkishore said and added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been apprised of this need through a memorandum submitted during his recent visit to the State.
Taking part at the press conference, Senior Advocate N Kumarjit said that the Centre could have set up a separate High Court for the State when Manipur got Statehood in 1972 .
At one point of time, people even lost faith in the law Court as some cases lasted around 15 to 20 years due to lack of subbordinate Courts and staff, he added.
Although, a separate High Court for the State came into being with lots of expectations last year, the Court is currently plagued with inadequate number of Judges.
With the appointment of two Judges, the High Court of Manipur was inaugurated by the then Union Minister for Law and Justice Ashwani Kumar on March 25 last year, N Kumarjit added.
He further said that it has been a demand for the bar association to appoint five Judges for the High Court of Manipur.
Although, the Union Minister assured in his speech at the inauguration function to appoint the remaining Judges within six months, only one Judge was appointed on November 26 last, N Kumarjit added.
As such, the High Court Bar Association of Manipur demanded the Prime Minister to increase the number of Judges to five in a memorandum submitted during his recent visit to the State on November 30 .
The memorandum also urged the Prime Minister to set up subordinate Courts at sud-divisional levels, he added.
Copies of the memorandum were also forwarded to Chief Justice of India, Union Minister for Law and Justice, Chief Justice of High Court of Manipur and Chief Minister of Manipur.
