Imphal, February 27 2020:
Nupi Samaj has urged the State Government not to consider legalising cannabis (ganja) plantation, looking after the never-ending war against substance abuse in Manipur.
Speaking to media persons at its office in Lamphel, Nupi Samaj president Th Ramani said that the abuse of various substances including alcohol and drugs have destroyed the lives of many youths.
As such, considering legalisation of the plant is unfortunate on the part of the State Government, she asserted.
The prolonged and tireless effort of many organisations to curb the drug menace in Manipur will be for nothing if ganja becomes a part of the menace.
Now-a-days, the millenials and youth are busy being a part of the western culture, with many trapped into substance abuse, she said.
The president further questioned if the economic situation of the State has reached such a desperate level that the people have to choose cultivating/producing drug as a way of earning livelihood.
She appealed to the State Government to think it through and to refrain from taking such steps in order to save the future of the youth.
