Phungzathang moots medical college status

Health and Family Welfare Minister Phungzathang Tonsing has expressed keen desire to upgrade Churachandpur district hospital to the status of a hill medical college.
The Minister today made a field assessment of the existing conditions of Nambol PHC, Bishnupur district hospital, Ningthoukhong PHC, Moirang CHC, Kwakta PHC and Churachandpur district hospital.
Phungzathang's team also included Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam, Parliamentary Secretary M Prithiviraj, Parliamentary Secretary Vungzagin Valte and top officials of Health Department.
Capitalising on the Minister's visit, hospital/health centre officials highlighted the inconveniences caused by irregular power supply, shortage of materials and need for infrastructure development.
Speaking to media persons after inspecting the hospitals/health centres, Phungzathang Tonsing expressed keen desire to upgrade Churachandpur district hospital to the status of a medical college for hill areas of Manipur.
He said that he would see if the idea can be translated into action in consultation with the Chief Minister.
Stating that extra efforts would be put in to see that new buildings being constructed for the Churachandpur district hospital are inaugurated at the earliest, the Health Minister noted around 150 patients are undergoing treatment at the hospital although its capacity is 100 beds.
"It was touching to see that many patients were lying on floor because of lack of beds.
I would work to provide additional beds very soon", Phungzathang said.
The Medical Council of India has agreed to raise the number of MBBS/BDS seats allotted to the State by 10 seats to 155 seats.
With regard to the inconveniences caused by irregular and inadequate power supply to hospitals, the Health Minister stated that he would look into the possibility of installing power plants.
He appealed to doctors and staff to dedicate more in their service.
District Health Society Mission Director Dr HL Liensang submitted a memorandum to the Health Minister requesting to increase the number of beds from 100 to 200 at the hospital and renovate the female health workers training school and the hostel.
