Recalling the people's revolt led by Jananeta Hijam Irabot on September 21, 1948 against the design of the Government to club Manipur into the proposed Purvanchal State, fitting tributes were paid to the farmers under the theme "Loumee Numit" (Farmers' Day), who had to face the brutalities of .the State machinery on that day at Pungdongbam.
The main function of the day was held at Pungdongbam ground, where floral tributes were paid at the memorial pillar constructed to recall the uprising, This was followed by a public meeting.
Additional Director of Fishery Department, K Saratkumar, president of Loumee Shinmee Apunba Lup (LOUSAL) A Rabi, president of MIKHOL Akoijam Janaki Devi and advisor of LOUSAL L Kula attended the function as guest of honour, president and guests of honour respectively.
A symposium under the theme "Manipurda Loumeegi Eehou" (Farmers' Movement in Manipur) was also held.
The day was also observed at Senapati district's Thayong village.
Project officer of IAAF Imphal East, RK Noyonsana was the chief guest while headman of the village L Retongkhup Kom presided.
Agriculture officer of Imphal East sub-division, T Holen was the guest of honour.
Similar function was also held at Wangjing Devi mandop at Thoubal district.
A two minute silence was observed to pay respect to the departed soul of Irabot.
Thoubal district Agri officer O Ibomcha, chairperson of Wangjing Lamding Nagar Panchayat Lenin Meitei and chairman of People for Animal, Thoubal district, M Loken attended the function as chief guest, president and guest of honour.
At Imphal West the day was observed at Wangoi Keithel with the Sub Divisional Agriculture officer S Chandramam Singh, ex-chairperson of Wangoi Nagar Panchayat W Amutombi and Mayai Lambi College lecturer H Somorjit Singh as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
