National Dedication Day was observed in a befitting manner along with organising a function at Kangla Hall here today to mark the 158th death anniversary of Maharaj Narasingh who played an important role in regaining the lost sovereignty of then Manipur kingdom from Burmese occupation.
Offering of floral tributes at the memorial of the departed leader located inside Kangla Fort, giving guard of honour by a contingent of Manipur Rifles, gun salute, reverse armed, slope arms, order arms and sounding of last post were the main highlights of the observance function organised by Maharaj Narasingh Memorial Committee, Imphal that has been set up under the auspices of the Government of Manipur for purpose.
Attended by Lok Sabha MP Dr T Meinya as chief guest, president of Maharaj Narasingh Memorial Committee, Imphal E Sonamani Singh as functional president and MLA of Naoriya Pakhanglakpa A/C RK Anand as guest of honour commenced with the opening patriotic song rendered by the artistes of Bal Mukundev Music College.
Many important personalities including writers and historians were also present at the occasion which also witnessed releasing of a souvenir by the chief guest.
Later addressing the august gathering as chief guest, MP Dr Meinya observed that the history of Manipuri civilisation has been a living testimony to the suffering and set back caused due to lack of unity among the people.
So it is time to respect and extend co-operation to each other.
The present generation should not forget the sacrifices made by their forefathers for the cause of motherland, he added.
Speaking as guest of honour of the function, MLA RK Anand asserted that the people have lost faith on the efficiency of the ruling Government as it has not been able to show the right direction to the people.
With the incident of killing taking place almost on daily basis and corruption ruling the roost, people are in a perplexing situation.
The MLA said that to save Manipuri society from further degradation, elected representatives of the people should have the spirit of sacrifice and dedication.
In continuation of the observance, National Dedication Celebration Day awards were presented to eight selected personalities and artistes of Rup Mahal Theatre staged the drama 'Narasingh'.
