DESAM notes non-availability of text books mess

Noting that academic session for the four-semester college education had already commenced, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) mooted that agents-concerned should be penalised for failing to publish Environmental Science text book till date.
Speaking to newspersons at its Keishampat office today, DESAM vice president M Angamba said under University Grants Commission guidelines ensuring availability of text books is mandatory at every institutes of higher education.
Citing incompatibility of Directorate of Education (University) for the students enduring severe inconveniences of text book unavailability, he also demanded that the publication firm(s) to whom the task has been assigned should produce the text books at the earliest failing which suitable punitive action should be initiated against the defaulting firms.
Contending that the Directorate and State's Department of Education have failed to live upto expectation of the student community, Angamba also pointed out that civic amenities such as provision of hygienic drinking water or regular power supply could not be ensured for practical studies, inspite of such facilities considered essential elements in a semester system of education.
On other hindrances faced by the students, he mentioned dilapidated toilets in many of the colleges and absence of updating academic curriculum by the authority concerned (Manipur university) .
The dESAM functionary also regretted that college administration has failed for almost the entire higher educational institutions are being run by in-charge Principals rather regular ones.
demanding suitable action against students who do not record 75 percent attendance in an academic session, he strongly stressed on updating the academic curriculum to conform with the Look East Policy.
Referring to another UGC guideline, he said an individual teacher need to be present at his/her institute for not less than six hours a day besides claiming that against the prescribed norm for 90 days of class under the semester system only about 30 days of classes could be conducted in Manipur.
Angamba also accused MU authorities of failing to conduct examinations and declare results in a routine manner.
Assistant general secretary of the student body P Premchandra, who was also present at the media briefing, asked officials of Directorate of education (U) to provide library books at the earliest for the time limit of six months has already lapsed for such provision.
He also suggested that normal academic activities for other classes should be continued even during the forthcoming examinations of BA, BSc and BCom scheduled to commence from April 17 .
