Rape of house wife; Condemnations get more vocal, dharna staged

Continuing the protest against the rape of a housewife by four persons incuding two IRB personnel at Keinou Awang Leikai in Bishnupur district in the adjoining nights on March 22-23, Naga Women Union, Rongmei Lu Phuam and womenfolk of Langol Range Foothill today staged a sit in protest at Grace Academy Junction, Guigailong vilage gate from 11 am till 4 pm.
Drawing the attention of the Government, the womenfolk put up a series of demands, including fitting punishment of all those involved in the heinous crime.
Asserting that the culprits should be segregated from society and they demanded that the Prevention of Discrimination and Atrocities on Scheduled Tribes Act, 1986 should be invoked against them.
Taking a strong stand, the women folk demanded that the culprits should be awarded life imprisonment, if not the death penalty, adequate monetary and other forms of compensation to the victim without delay to enable her to seek medical help for HIV test and to compensate for the loss of working days, to terminate the service of SI Tiken the police commando attached to Bishnupur police station for providing the firearm to the culprits.

The womenfolk also urged the police authority to restore the faith of the people and ensure that innocent people are not victimised.
Speaking at the protest site, president of Rongmei Lu Phuam, Panti Golmei said that the women folk have taken serious note of the gangrape of the housewife.
The rapists, Laikhuram Rojit Singh (28) of Porompat, IRB Havildar Salam Bijen Singh (34) of Uripok, 1st MR personnel Ch Ibomcha Singh (37) of Thongju Boroi Makhong and Ksh Kennedy (37) of Kongpal Chanam Leikai should be given fitting punishment and added that a mere jail term will not be acceptable.
SI Tiken who provided the fire arm to the rapists too should be given fitting punishment, she added.
