New Delhi, August 23 2012:
The roumour mill has been grinding at Delhi during the last week with North East student bodies here receiving several queries.
As in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune, student unions of various North East States in Delhi were constantly asked and queried about incidents, such as women from NE being attacked, boys beaten up etc.
Several Delhi based student bodies have been trying their best to ascertain and confirm the incidents/ information.
Till today vague information or calls inquiring about incidents of attacks on North East people etc are being received by student leaders.
"We go and visit places where we get reports of attack, but we didn't see any proof or confirmation" said Naga student leader Huten Alexander .
Yesterday, former Manipuri student leader Malem Ningthouja said that he received a call from one reportedly coming from Manipur saying that locals attacked his son in Delhi.
But he refused to identify himself citing 'some excuse ( security)' .
Delhi Police Joint Commissioner Robin Hibu told The Sangai Express that he had personally visited places where incidents are reported.
"There is neither any report to the police nor such incidents" said the Jt.
Commisioner of Police.
"I and my team are constantly monitoring areas where NE people are mostly residing" he said.
In a statement issued today, the Naga Students' Union, Delhi clarified that so far no untoward incident has been reported in the capital relating to the backlash of the Assam violence.
It said that as far as the union is concern, it has held various rounds of talks with the Delhi Police authorities in finding positive and effective steps in tackling the prevailing situation.
The union stated that it also met and discussed with the authorities concerned at Nagaland House.
The Student body also warned against circulating information without proper source and evidence which may create fear psychosis among the general Naga populace in the capital.
NSUD further assured all concerned parents and relatives that Delhi is normal and appealed to all to stay calm and positive.
It also assured its fellow members that in case of any misadventure, incident, NSUD shall take stringent action against any individual responsible for it as the union is working together closely with various other organisations, student bodies, Delhi police and senior Naga members.
Keeping in mind the responsibilities bestowed upon the union executives, NSUD would like to state that the safety and security of each and every individual Naga in Delhi and NCR is of utmost concern, said the student body further.
