Imphal, July 22 2011:
In connection with the road improvement work of Sita Lamkhai to Rilram Centre (SH: Shingling from 0.22 km to 5.8 km) under SPA, Chandel 2009-10, the Yekkul Union Social Organisation (YUSO) under Tengnoupal Sub-Division in Chandel district has appealed the authority concerned to halt any payment alleging that there has not been any progress in the improvement work.
Nothing has been done to improve the five kilometres stretch of road in spite of the information that bill for the same work will be released soon, said a release issued by the head of YUSO K Angdou.
Due to deplorable condition of the road, people of the area comprising 17 villages with a population of around 4500 have been enduring hardships all these years in their daily chore.
In spite of complaint lodged last December regarding the dilapidated condition of the road there has not been any positive response from the authority concerned, it said.
However, to our surprise, few contractors are running pillar to post in order to draw the bill for work which has never been done, it added.
Expressing resentment over the possible release of the bill, it cautioned that the Executive Engineer of PWD Chandel would be held responsible if the same is released against the will of the public.
It also appealed the State Govt to look into grievances of the people pertaining to deplorable condition of the road which connects the people of the area with the outside world.
Urging the department concerned to initiate immediate spot inquiry into the matter, it also asserted that the Yekkul Union Social Organisation, the apex body of all civil society organisations of the area, will not hesitate to pursue any intense form of agitation in case no positive response is given.
