Imphal, July 10 2012:
In addition to the existing two Directorates of Education (S) and Education (U), opposition MLA Dr I Ibohalbi today made a proposal during discussion of demands in the State Assembly for establishment of a third Directorate for Primary education.
In this age of globalization, there is not a single Government school in Manipur which can impress parents and students.
Under such circumstances, it remains a big question whether students can compete at the international level.
Stating that majority of the doctors and engineers produced by the State did their schooling in private schools, Dr Ibohalbi highlighted the need to monitor private schools too.
There is an urgent need to revive and improve all the Government colleges.
As of now, there is no Government college in the State except DM College which is worth its salt.
Stating that democracy would find its true meaning only when there is peace and security in the society, Dr Ibohalbi pointed out that it is the duty of police to maintain law and order.
Police cannot rule a State but in Manipur, many police personnel were engaged in extortion, had nexus with UG groups, involved in politics and executed contract works, asserted the opposition MLA.
Questioning as to how such conduct of police can be corrected, Dr Ibohalbi remarked that people are frightened by police.
He urged the Government to make Manipur Police a respectable force.
