Imphal, January 04 2016:
In the wake of the devastating earthquake which killed seven people apart from leaving an extensive trail of destruction, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has appealed to all the people of the State to stay calm and pay no need to rumour mongering.
Briefing media persons this evening, Ibobi stated that all necessary emergency mea-sures have been taken up to reach out to earthquake victims and face aftershocks.
A 24X7 central control room having telephone num-ber 0385-2440909 has been set up at the State level for receiving feedback round the clock.
Control rooms have been opened at the offices of De-puty Commissioners and these control rooms have been communicating with the State headquarters.
Telephone numbers of rapid response medical teams for each district have been notified.
Essential medicines and medical kits have been procured and despatched to all district headquarters as well as Moreh, Jiribam and Kang-pokpi.
The Medical Directorate has asked all Government and private hospitals to reserve beds for earthquake victims and extend every possible assistance to all the victims.
School buildings have been identified by the Medical Department for setting up temporary hospitals or relief camps, if the need arises.
In order to remain prepared for any worse after shock, general holiday has been declared on January 5 and 6 for State Government departments except departments/offices providing essential services like Health, Works, PHED, Power, IFCD, security establishments and Secretariat.
This arrangement would keep roads free for rapid movement of emergency response teams.
Ibobi stated that a team of 65 members from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has already arrived in the State.
One team has been despatched to Noney and Nungba area and the second team is deployed in and around Imphal area.
A medical team of NDRF and another team of the Geological Survey of India would be arriving here tomorrow, Ibobi informed.
He also conveyed solidarity to all the bereaved families whose near and dear ones have been killed in the earthquake.
To a query, Ibobi stated that the exact degree of destruction has not been worked out as of now but it would be known by tomorrow.
Regarding break down of certain portions of two Ima Keithels, Ibobi stated that the State Government would consider about consulting IIT Roorkee for re-construction of the market complexes or strengthen the existing structures.
Personnel of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been trained in phased manner but the existing staff and equipment are not adequate.
The Government is examining whether to recruit SDRF personnel from amongst police personnel or make fresh appointment, Ibobi stated.
Earlier in the day while visiting the injured victims at RIMS, he pledged to provide all possible assistance to all deceased and injured victims from the side of the State Government.
