Shija Blood Bank and Transfusion Services, located at Shija Hospitals complex, Langol has become the first NABH (National Accreditation Board of Hospitals and Healthcare Service Providers) accredited blood bank in North East India.
The blood bank has been granted the accreditation number BB-2013-0057, effective from October 25, 2013.The accreditation has been granted for meeting the required quality standard set by the authorities of NABH, said a press release.
Shija Blood Bank and Transfusion Services is a PPP model blood bank, funded by North Eastern Council, Shillong and State Planning Department.
The management is undertaken by Shija Healthcare and Research Institute.
The press release said that SHRI Managing Director Dr Kh Palin announced the accreditation of the blood bank in a press conference held in the presence of State Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing.
Dr Palin mentioned about the availability of Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) in the blood bank, which is the first of its kind in eastern India.
NAAT is the most advanced technology worldwide, which can detect HIV, Hepatitis B and C virus in nine days.
Whereas with the conventional Elisa method the window period is three weeks to six months depending on the virus.
Post exposure till detection is known as window period, he added.
He also said that Manipur with its vision to be the healthcare hub of South East Asia, the certification and adoption of the most advanced screening technology is important.
He appealed to the State Health Department to sponsor NAAT screening for the patients who need blood transfusion.
Phungzathang Tonsing appreciated the effort of SHRI management to bring quality healthcare to the State.
He mentioned that Shija Blood Bank and Transfusion Services is the 57th Blood Bank to be awarded the NABH accreditation.
He took serious note of the incidents of transfusion transmitted HIV and Hepatitis B and C .
The Minister assured that he would take up the proposal of making NAAT mandatory in the State.
