Woman suffering from JE expires

Imphal, July 31 2020: Amidst the rising death toll resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, a woman suffering from Japanese Encephalitis (JE) has died at Thiyam Konjil, Imphal East district.

The 45 year old woman identified as Elangbam (N) Chanam (O) Ranjana died at her Thiyam Konjil Samanching Leikai residence at around 6 am yesterday.

According to information received from the bereaved family, the woman was taken to RIMS casualty ward on July 22 as she was suffering from acute headache and fever.

After the woman was referred to the Medicine Ward of the same hospital, her blood sample was tested and it was found positive for JE.

Even though the woman's condition was still critical, the doctors attending to the woman discharged her on July 27, according to the family members.

Taking to media persons at JNIMS mortuary today, the woman's husband said that his wife was infected by JE and he was told to take her home on July 27 .

The doctors further advised him to bring his wife to RIMS Neurology OPD with laboratory reports after two weeks.

At that time, the patient was quite critical and she was kept on nose feeding.

"Even as we implored the doctors to let her stay at RIMS for some more days so that she could get necessary treatment, the doctors turned down our requests", said the husband.

He said that he had submitted a report at Irilbung police station regarding the death of his wife.

He said that they were taking his wife's body to JNIMS mortuary for post mortem.

Meanwhile the Service on Liberal Organisation (SOLO Club) has questioned how a patient who was in critical condition was discharged from RIMS.

The way the patient was discharged reeked of sheer irresponsibility and the RIMS authority should bear sole responsibility for the woman's death, said a press release issued by SOLO Club.

It also urged the Government to take up befitting action against RIMS authority and the doctors who attended to the woman.
