Imphal, July 27 2010:
A delegation of MPP led by its president Dr Nimaichand Luwang today called on Governor Gurbachan Jagat and urged him to take up necessary measures to control the spiralling prices of essential commodities in Manipur.
Talking to mediapersons at the party office here after the meeting with the Governor, Dr Nimaichand informed that the delegation apprised the Governor on the present situation in Manipur today where there a complete economic breakdown and urged him to take up necessary measures to control prices of essential commodities and ensure adequate availability to the people.
Dr Nimaichand observed that though the issue of price rise is there all over the country, the crisis being experienced in Manipur today is an artificial one.
If scarcity of food and other essential commodities and its resultant price rise is due to the over two-month long economic blockade imposed along the National Highway 39, the Government is expected to take up some concrete measures to control the prices, Dr Nimaichand said, while wondering how long the people of Manipur are going to suffer because of the inefficiency of the State Government.
So, during the meeting, the MPP delegation reminded the Governor that the Centre is duty bound to intervene and bail out Manipur from the present crisis since the Government has not done anything in this regard.
After giving a patient hearing to the complaint of MPP delegation, the Governor conveyed that on his part reports are being send to the Centre every day and the situation in Manipur is being examined closely, Dr Nimaichand informed.
Acknowledging that the slogan shouting by four MPP workers inside the Assembly yesterday was against the privilege of the House, Dr Nimaichand, however, asserted that it was not to challenge the privilege of the House, but to send out the message that the suffering of the people should taken more seriously than anything else.
He recalled that MPP had organised a mass protest march on July 14 with the intention of proceeding upto the Assembly to raise the demand ensure adequate supply of essential commodities to the people and controlling the prices.
However, the police have foiled the protest march.
Nonetheless, it is the commitment of MPP to reach out its voice to the Assembly and the commitment was fulfilled yesterday along with completion of one year of electing party president, Dr Nimaichand added.
