Manipur Tourism Festival, 2009, which has been officially renamed as Sangai Festival has kicked off from today at Hafta
Kangjeibung here.
The festival which will continue till December 19 is being organised by the Tourism Department with the main objective of show-casing the arts and culture, crafts, indigenous sports and tourist spots of the State.
In all 300 stalls including representatives from outside Manipur are participating in the festival.

The most interesting aspect of the festival this time is the participation of 17 different stalls from Thailand.
The model of these 17 stalls are being designed by the Thai Council, office of the Commercial Affairs, Royal Thai Embassy.
However, these stalls will be officially inaugurated by counsellor of Royal Thai Embassy Tharadol Thongruang tomorrow.
The inaugural function of the festival today was attended by Principal Secretary of the State Government PC Lawmkunga, IAS as chief guest; Link Commissioner of Tourism KK Chhetry, IAS as president and IGAR (South) Major Gen AK Choudhury and counsellor of Royal Thai Embassy Tharadol Thongruang as guests of honour.
In his address, PC Lawmkunga observed that with introduction of border trade at Moreh under the Look East Policy of India and opening of the road upto Hanoi of Vietnam, Manipur would become an important destination of the tourists.
The Government of India and Manipur has been trying to develop Manipur in this regard.
Accordingly, Union Ministry of Home Affairs has sanctioned Rs 125 crores for setting up an Integrated Check Post at Moreh.
Tharadol Thangruang pointed out that there is close cultural affinity between the people of Thailand and Manipur and expressed desire for organising similar Manipur Tourism festival in Thailand as well.
On promotion of Manipur as an important destination of the tourists, he, however, noted the need for improving the existing infrastructures.
Major General AK Choudhury expressed hope that organising such festival would help in spreading the cultural message of Manipur far and wide.
After the inauguration function, the dignitaries also went around to inspect the stalls.
In the evening, cultural programmes were organised to amuse the visitors.
