Tamenglong, December 10 2009:
Along with a cultural razz-matazz, Orange Festival has begun from today at the public ground of Tamenglong district headquarters.
In all, 200 stalls displaying produce of 35 tonnes of Oranges are participating in the festival this year.
Vice Chairman of Hill Area Committee of the Manipur Legislative Assembly Khangthuanang Panmei and MLA Awangbou Newmai inaugurated the festival as chief guest and functional president respectively.

Brigadier Anil Chauhan of 59 Mountain Brigade; Horticulture Commissioner Moses Chalai and DIG Range-IV M Sushilkumar were also present as guests of honour.
It may be noted here that Governor Gurbachan Jagat was supposed to inaugurate the festival as chief guest.
However, he could not attend the event, due to some sudden development.
Speaking at the occasion, Khangthuanang Panmei announced that the Government has sanctioned Rs 3.6 crores under Multi-Sectoral Development Programme for the development of the Orange farmers.
In the competition section of the festival for the highest production, Laison of Phalong won the first prize while Khangsiang and Charles Liang of Tamenglong won the second and the third prize respectively.
The chief guest presented the prizes to the winners.
As part of the festival, an Orange Queen contest was also organised.
In all 20 contestants from Imphal, 12 from Tamenglong and one from Nagaland participated in the contest vying for the title.
