Imphal, September 09 2011:
After reviewing the prevailing law and order situation in the backdrop of indefinite blockade being imposed by SHDDC on National Highways, the State Cabinet has decided to deploy additional forces along the Imphal-Jiribam section of NH 37 .
A senior Cabinet Minister informed The Sangai Express that a Cabinet meeting was held this evening with Chief Minister Okram Ibobi in the chair.
The meeting, after discussing at length the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the State due to prolonged blockade on National Highways, decided to deploy additional forces along Imphal-Jiribam road.
The Cabinet meeting also reviewed the stock position of essential commodities including
fuel oils.
It also resolved to bring in essential commodities by increasing the strength of security convoys which would escort goods carriers.
If needed, central paramilitary forces would also be used to ensure uninterrupted transportation of goods into the State, informed the senior Cabinet Minister.
A convoy of empty trucks and oil tankers would leave Imphal for Jiribam tomorrow to ship in essential commodities.
It also deliberated on the Centre's request to provide machinery and labour for repairing the 32 Kms long highly dilapidated portion from Keimai to Kambiron.
Notably, the State Works Department has also been studying the request of the Union Cabinet Secretary to provide machinery and labour for development of Imphal-Jiribam highway .
