Imphal, February 07 2010:
As a part of the package of building modern roads in all the Northeastern States with funding from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), a modern road of length 123 kms would be constructed in Manipur.
A well placed source informed that work on the proposed modern road is likely to begin from 2011 .
The proposed 123 kms long road would be 5.5 m wide and its estimated cost Rs 320 crores approximately.
Like other Northeastern States which have been proposing construction of one modern road each in their States with funding from the ADB, the Government of Manipur proposed the 123 kms long road.
The forthcoming mammoth investment of ADB in the Northeastern States would be done through the Ministry of DoNER.
The Government of India would distribute the amount invested by ADB to the States as grants.
This project of constructing modern roads would be done phases.
According to this arrangement, a modern road would be constructed in Manipur in the second phase.
As the first phase has not been initiated yet, it is being speculated that execution of the second phase which includes Manipur's 123 kms long road may begin from 2011.The proposed modern road to be constructed with ADB funding would start from Tupul and pass through Rengpang, Bishnupur and Toubul.
From Toubul, the road would go alongside Loktak lake and connect to Mayang Imphal from where it would be extended to Thoubal, Yairipok and ultimately Kasom Khullen.
Survey work for the proposed road has been already completed.
However, Public Works Dept is yet to furnish the report.
It is being targeted to complete the road construction within three days.
The alignment of the road would be made in such a manner that private lands are not affected as far as possible.
