While industrial houses may be a far cry in the present scenario, Manipuris given a chance certainly possess enough talent and determination to invent machinery suited to local environment and purpose.
A visit at the ongoing Khadi exhibition clearly illustrates the enterprising spirit of State youths.
For the first time ever in the annal of silk producing unit in the State, one locally designed silk yarn spinner machine is put on display at the ongoing State Level Khadi and Village Industries Exhibition at the Mapai Kangjeibung.
Longjam Khirjit(33), son of L Tomba of Khurai Puthiba Leikai is the inventor of the machine christened 'Khirjit Muga Machine' that can utilise/accommodate fourteen persons simultaneously.
When a team of media-persons met him this afternoon at his exhibition stall under the banner 'Khirjit Khadi and Industry Production Centre', the inventor stated that due to persistent pressure by local girl trainees for a more sophisticated device to spin silk yams he invented the machine.
After initial failure in his attempt for the invention, hard work, repeated experiment and dedication, his cherished dream turned into reality last March, a beaming Khirjit said.
He also demonstrated that the fourteen seated machine could be operated manually as well as through power.
By engaging maximum manpower the machine can spin 300 grams of silk yarn from the cocoons per hour, disclosed the enterprising youth while adding that he had incurred around Rs 30,000 as material cost to set up the machine.
On his previous experiences, Khirjit remarked that he is armed with two years electrician course from the ITI.
Elaborating of recognition of his invention, Khirjit said that KVIC will issue a certificate for his machine tomorrow and exuded confidence that the machine would be upgraded by making technical adjustments in due course of time.
He went on to add that the centre of only spins yarns but also produces silk clothing.
