The Governor Ved Marwah today released a book at State Guest House on 'Herbal medicine of Manipur: A Colour Encyclopedia' written by Doctors HB Singh, RS Singh and JS Sandhu of the Regional Research Laboratory published by Daya Publishing House.
The Governor said the book is the first of its kind in India and is a useful and interesting document on traditional herbal medicines of Manipur where 375 species of medicinal plants are recorded.
All the 375 species are represented by 442 colour photographs for easy reference.
Names are given in all important languages.
The earth is supporting about 5 lakhs angiospermic plants in which about 10000 plants are estimated to be used regularly for medicinal purposes in one form or the other.
Manipur falls in Indo Burma center of 25 bio diversity Hot spots of global significance.
The state is rich in diversity of plants and is the meeting point of Indo Malayan floristic elements.
Takhtajan, a famous Russian botanist described the region as a cradle of flowering plants.
The region is a gene pool of global bio diversity specially medicinal herbs he added.
Medicinal plants play a vital role in health care to the people of Manipur and the herbal products have been gaining ground in resent past due to various reasons.
The traditional herbal medicines are not expensive and have less side effects as compared to the modem synthetic drugs.
