Imphal, August 17, 2012:
With the stated objective of providing adequate supply of electricity to the people of the state, the state government has decided to implement the long-awaited Hydro Power Project Policy during the current fiscal year along with commissioning of the various Hydel Power Projects being implemented in the state.
According to official sources, the actual requirement of power in the state is 2000 megawatt.
But the state produces only 105 megawatt of power and the deficit amount of power is bought from various other power corporations.
Sources revealed that since the state does not produce enough power, the state government is planning to take up various hydel power projects.
Among these projects include the Loktak Downstream Project with an estimated power production of 66 megawatt in Tamenglong district; the Tipaimukh Hydel Power Project with an estimated power production of 1500 megawatt in Churachandpur district; the Irang Hydel Power Project with an estimated power production of 60 megawatt in Tamenglong district; the Tuivai Hydel Power Project with an estimated power production of 51 megawatt in Churachandpur district; the Pabram Hydel Power Project with an estimated power production of 190 megawatt in Tamenglong district; the Nungleiban Hydel Power Project with an estimated power production of 105 megawatt in Tamenglong district; the Khongnem Chakha Hydel Power Project with an estimated power production of 67 megawatt in Churachandpur district and the Maklang Tuyengbi Hydel Power Project with an estimated power production of 4 megawatt in Ukhrul district.
Considering the huge amount of money spent by the government in procuring electricity from other power corporations, the state government has decided to take up Irang Hydel Power Project, Tuivai Hydel Power Project, Pabram Hydel Power Project, Nungleiban Hydel Power Project, Khongnem Chakha Hydel Power Project and the Maklang Tuyengbi Hydel Power Project on priority basis during the current fiscal year.
The state government is still unable to put the Hydro Power Policy-2008 into effect.
However, the government has entrusted the Power Department to implement the policy from the current fiscal year.
With the implementation of the policy, all the hydel power projects can be taken up, sources added.
During the initiation process of Hydro Power Policy-2008, it was decided that the projects would be taken up by different agencies such as Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) and State Public Sector Undertaking (SPSU).
So, these hydel power projects are most likely to be taken up by some corporation.
Moreover, the state government is planning to convert the Power Department into a Corporation, sources noted.
