Imphal, June 29:
Lawyers of the State have demanded the immediate withdrawal/suspension of the clause regarding the extension of the ceasefire or to add a clause that the extension will not be applicable to the territory of Manipur.
This was decided during a joint meeting of the High Court Bar Association, Manipur, All Manipur Bar Association, Young Lawyers Forum and the All Manipur Lady Advocates Association held today at the premises of the District and Sessions Judge, Uripok.
The meeting chaired by senior advocate Ch Nodiachand Singh strongly condemned the police firing on June 14 and demanded a judicial inquiry headed by a High Court judge into the matter.
It also resolved for amendment of Article 3 of the Constitution to protect the territorial boundary of Manipur as done in Kashmir.
The meeting decided to constitute a committee to examine the feasibility of challenging the ceasefire agreement and its extension without territorial limits in the court of law or before an international forum.
The lawyers appointed advocates Ch Nodiachand and T Nandakumar (former AG) as president and convenor of the Committee.
It was decided to canvass for support amongst the MPs so that the truce extension may be defeated on the floor of Parliament.
A memorandum would be submitted to the Governor after a peaceful rally of the lawyers and retired judges in full uniforms.
