Imphal, June 29:
The Naga Peoples Convention, Senapati, held yesterday in the camera at the Poumai Baptist Church at Senapati, has finally come out with its resolutions and a declaration today.
Both the documents whole heartedly welcomed the extension of ceasefire between the government of India and the NSCN (IM), without territorial limit to usher in a process of healing to the land for lasting peace.
Since the convention was held strictly in camera and no pressmen or any other non members were allowed in, it is not known if the decision was unanimous or how strong the dissenting voices were, if at all.
The convention drew up a 9-point resolution declaring among others that no Naga elected representatives in the Manipur Legislative Assembly and the MPs have the mandate to represent the Nagas if their views and statements does not reflect the views of the Naga Peoples (sic).
It also resolved to call upon the government of India to handle with wisdom the agreement to make way for a meaningful dialogue in order to enhance the peace process for bringing about a lasting political solution to the long drawn out Indo-Naga conflict.
The resolution said it will move the Naga Hoho to appeal to the government of India to lift the ban on various Naga organisations to facilitate the peace talks.
It also said tit will appeal to the Meitei community interact with the Naga peoples by visiting the Naga areas and put in their efforts in understanding the history and struggles of the Naga people.
A coordinating committee on ceasefires has also been formed of which the United Naga Council, UNC, and the All Naga Students Association, Manipur, ANSAM, have been made the convenor and co-convenor respectively.
It said it would also call upon the Manipur Government to beef up security around Naga areas in and around Imphal as well as other sensitive hill districts.
It also called upon the Naga community and the churches to leave aside the second Sabbath/Sunday of July for fasting and thanksgiving.
