Under the sponsorship of Women Action for Development (WAD), a one-day capacity building programme on violence against women was organised by ASHAs, Thinungei village at Loyalakpa community hall, Thinungei Mayai Leikai today.
Around 80 ASHA workers and Anganwadi workers attended the programme.
Conducting the programme as a resource person, secretary of WAD Sobita Mangsatabam informed that from January to June, 2011, in all 94 cases of violence against women have been reported in Manipur.
These include 5 cases of rape , one case of rape and murder, two cases of murder, one murder attempt, 11 suicide cases, 34 missing cases, five molestation cases, three cases of attempted rape, two cases of abandonment, seven cases of assault, two cases of kidnapping, etc.
Considering that cases of violence against women in Manipur has been on the rise, women themselves need to come together and fight against such violence, Sobita said, while pointing out that Anganwadi workers, Panchayat members, local clubs and Meira Paibis could play an important role in stopping violence against women.
Advocate Soibam Hemanta explained that Domestic Violence Act was first mooted in 2005 and it has been implemented since 2006 .
Before that there was no such laws to protect women from domestic violence.
However, till 2007, the public were not aware of the Act.
Even today, people in Imphal area may be very much aware of the Act, but it is not so in places far away from Imphal, he noted.
