Two truck drivers engaged in transporting FCI rice along with a helper were reportedly assaulted by unidentified miscreants last night at Sangaiprou under Lamphel PS in Imphal West.
The miscreants, who spoke broken Manipuri, also snatched cash amount of Rs 7,200 from a victim driver and allegedly misbehaved with the wife of one of the drivers.
The drivers and helpers were spending the night in their vehicles awaiting their turn to unload rice from their vehicles when the incident took place last night at around 10.30 .
Speaking to reporters today, one of the victim drivers, Laishram Basanta (26) s/o (L) Binod Babu of Silchar, Assam said that they were beaten up by the gang of miscreants without any rhyme or reason.
Basanta is the driver of a truck AS-17B/0286 .
He said a cash amount of Rs 7,200 was snatched by the miscreants from him besides beating up his helper, Achibu Angami (17) s/o Mashinizo of Chumukedima, Nagaland.
The miscreants also beat up another driver of a truck (NL-01G/2563) identified as Augustine Mao (28) s/o Pfokolo of Senapati's Makhan village.
The wife of Augustine accompanied him along with his helper, who is also his brother in-law to tour Imphal.
The miscreants also pulled the driver's wife in her hand and took her photograph in their mobile phone.
At the same time, Highway Truck Owners' Welfare Organisation (HILTOWO) and Manipur Drivers' Welfare Association have vehemently condemned the incident.
Laishram Ratan Khuman, general secretary of HILTOWO said that it was very unfortunate that such drivers and helpers engaged in transporting rice for people of the State were harassed in such a manner.
He appealed to the authority concerned to act swiftly and book the culprits at the earliest.
