Imphal, February 04 2015:
Extending support to the indefinite bandh along Imphal-Moreh road, National Highway 102 imposed by the JAC Against the Atrocities of Central Security Forces, Chandel District demanding removal of 24 Assam Rifles post from Tengnoupal at the earliest; All Manipur United Clubs' Organization (AMUCO) asserted that the call of the indefinite bandh is a fallout of excesses meted out by personnel of 24 AR to villagers, passengers and traders along the highway.
Addressing a press meet at its office located at Kwakeithel Bazar on Wednesday, AMUCO president Dr Y Mani Khuman pointed out that even pregnant women and children were detained and made to walk long distance after subjecting them to unnecessary security check.
He said that routine security check by 24 AR personnel may be necessary from security point of view but detaining people including pregnant women and children for long is unreasonable.
Stating that the organization has been closely observing the development regarding the excesses committed by 24 AR personnel to the common people from Chandel district, the president of AMUCO cautioned that the union will resort to launch different forms of agitation if the government fails to bring an amicable solution to the matter.
He then appealed to the concerned civil society organizations based both in the hills and valley to join hands together and face the atrocities by 24 AR personnel.
Advisor of AMUCO Rahman who was present during the meet strongly condemned the highhandedness of 24 AR personnel which has drawn flak from many sections and demanded Chief Minister O Ibobi to remove the AR post from Tengnoupal at the earliest in the interest of the people.
The excesses of the AR personnel posted at Tengnoupal came at a time when collective demand for repeal of Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA), 1958 is on.
The State Government should exert pressure on the Central Government to remove the post as early as possible, he said.
Vice-president of AMUCO Ph Devan was also present during the meet.
