Yaithaba fishing fest concludes at Barak

Imphal, May 10 2017:
The annual fishing festival of Yaithaba � celebrated by Maram community� concluded at the Barak River today.
Willong Khunou had hosted this year's edition of the fishing festival, which was held for two days with huge participation of fishers from (Sangkhumai and Pangmaram.
Each year, around two thousand men and women participate in the Yaithaba.
Maling Maram, the chief of Willong Khunou, recalled that the people of Maram have been celebrating this festival since time immemorial keeping up the spirit and essence of the festival till today.

He added the haul from the festival foretells the success or failure of a year's harvest.
The chief explained, as a custom, people are not allowed to take part in 'yaithaba' if they bleed because it is believed that such a condition can strengthen the fish.
Maling Maram continues that no woman goes to the river after 3 pm and no man is allowed to take any fish for his own consumption.
The menfolk fish for the whole night and the people enjoy a community feast the next day.
