Seminar on Manipur's history begins

A two-day seminar on 'Ariba Manipurgee Itihash' (Ancient Manipuri History) organised by Manipur Historical Society, Imphal in collaboration with Department of History, Modern College under the sponsorship of State's Department of Art and Culture has commenced from today at the College.
As chief guest of the inauguration programme, Padmashree and former Principal of Imphal Law College RK Jhalajit Singh emphasised on thorough assessment of different books to understand the origin and unique composition of Manipur's populace.
Asserting that ancient history of Manipur could be understood if one peruses ancient documents preserved by the Manipuri forefathers, he contended that the script (Meitei Mayek) approved by the Government of Manipur do not facilitate a reader to properly understand the chronicles.
Director (Art & Culture) Dr K Sobita Devi, who addressed the gathering noted that Manipur Historical Society has been taking the leading role whenever there is distortion of Manipur's history.
Citing restoration of ancient monuments inside Kangla as an example of the Society's contribution to preserve Manipur's history, she also solicited support and material contribution by the State's scholars as well as the general public to further enrich history of Manipur.
A discussion session in the morning and afternoon of the opening day were also held with retired Director of Art and Culture Kh sorojini Devi and former Principal of DM College of Arts O Kumar as the moderators respectively.
