Armed man attempting to abduct village chief rounded up

Imphal, January 10 2015 :
A man who came to serve monetary demand using a gun to chief of Longa Koireng Village under Sapermeina Police Station was rounded up by locals of the village on Saturday.
The man has been identified as David Haokip (21) s/o Haokhopao Haokip of Leimakhong NC Phai.
A 9mm country made pistol, ten live rounds, one mobile handset and one Airtel sim card were found from his possession.
According to reports, two men claiming to be cadres of KRF came to the residence of S Sokhel, chief of Longa Koireng Village and tried to take him forcibly.
Intervening into the act, family members of the village chief alerted nearby locals who arrived at the residence and chased the two men.
Knowing that they were chased, the two men opened fires in a bid to escape safely from the clutches of the locals.
Later, they were seen rushing to a bushy area in between Old Village and New Village in Longa Koireng.
The locals surrounded the area and pulled up David Haokip along a 9mm pistol.
However, the other man managed to flee the area.
On questioning, it was revealed that David used to extort money using the name of KRF outfit.
However, the man admitted that he is a cadre of KRA.
He has been handed over to members of Kuki Inpi Moltamlang Museum.
Later, he along with the pistiol seized from his possession was handed over to 8th Assam Rifles Kotlen Post.
As stated by villages, two armed men claiming to be cadres of KRF had served a monetary demand of Rs 2 lakh to a contractor identified as W Khelchochung of Longa Koireng Village on January 7 last.
The armed men also had beaten family members of the contractor on the day.
On hearing the incident, locals along with the village chief rushed to the area to enquire the incident.
The armed men had threatened that the village chief should take the sole responsibility if the monetary demand they served is not fulfilled.
