Imphal, April 29 2012:
Power consumption in Paona Bazar area has come down by 50 per cent following introduction of prepaid meter system and on account of this new system, power is now available throughout the day.
Talking with The Sangai Express, Power Department Chief Engineer N Sarat claimed that many new developments can be seen in Paona Bazar regarding power supply since activation of prepaid meter system.
Coupled with introduction of the prepaid meter system, power cables have been laid underground thereby getting rid of electric poles.
This has considerably freed the busy commercial area off the mess created by electric wires and poles.
Whereas the overall power consumption in Paona Bazar area has come down by 50 per cent, the department is able to collect tax two to three times greater than the average amount of tax collected before introduction of prepaid meter system.
Moreover, the department has succeeded in ensuring power supply round the clock in Paona Bazar area, claimed the Chief Engineer.
The new system gives no room to the department's meter readers/staff or other individuals to manipulate the power meter.
"The new system is quite encouraging", he remarked.
So far, around 5000 prepaid meters have reportedly been installed in Thangal Bazar, Hatta Golapati, Palace Compound, North AOC, Pandol and Namdulong.
All these meters would be activated soon in phase-wise manner.
Since the introduction of prepaid meter system, consumers have learnt to use power in judicious manner and there is little loss of power.
Notably, around 70 per cent of the power is lost in transmission while the Centre has been deducting Rs 11 crores at source every month from what is due to the State for purchasing power from other States/companies.
