HIV transmission rate declines

According to a sentinel surveillance report of Manipur State AIDS Control Society (MSACS), HIV transmission rate among pregnant women, injecting drug users and female sex workers has declined considerably.
The sentinel surveillance was conducted between 2003 and 2012.HIV transmission rate from mothers to children was 1.3 per cent in 2003 and it dropped to 0.64 per cent in 2012.It is now zero per cent in Churachandpur district.
HIV transmission rate from mothers to children in Imphal East district was 0.5 per cent before it rose to one per cent in 2004, 2006 and 2007.The figure dropped to 0.5 per cent in 2012.The corresponding figure for Imphal West district is 0.53 per cent.
For Bishnupur district, HIV transmission rate from mothers to children has declined from 1.63 per cent to one percent.
In Thoubal district, it has come down to 0.38 per cent from 0.63 per cent.
The figure has dropped to 0.52 per cent from 1.75 per cent in Chandel district.
At 3 per cent, Ukhrul district recorded the highest HIV transmission rate from mothers to children in 2003 but it came down to 2.25 per cent in 2012.Yet, the HIV transmission rate still remains high in the district.
Both Senapati and Tamenglong districts have come down to 0.25 per cent from the identical figure of 0.75 per cent.
Number of injecting drug users fell to 12.89 per cent in 2010 from 30.7 per cent in 2003 .
The corresponding figures for Churachandpur district is 41.2 per cent in 2003 and 13.2 per cent in 2010 .
For Imphal West district, number of injecting drug users was 18 per cent in 2003 and it has dropped to 13.18 per cent.
The corresponding figures for Bishnupur district are 22.4 per cent and 13.16 per cent.
HIV prevalence rate among female sex workers was 12.4 per cent in 2003 and it came down to 2.8 per cent in 2010 .
Imphal West district where HIV prevalence rate among female sex workers was the highest recorded a much reduced figure of 1.6 per cent in 2010, as per the sentinel surveillance report.
