Imphal, November 12 2019:
The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) launched a drive at various parts of Khwairamband Keithel today in a bid to prevent businessmen and shopkeepers from raising the prices of goods and essential commodities taking advantage of the current protests being held across the State under the aegis of COCOMI.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the inspection drive, AMSU vice president Laishram Athouba said that COCOMI has been spearheading various protests and cease work across the State in light of the Naga peace talks.
However, taking advantage of the situation, many businessmen and shopkeepers in Khwairamband Keithel are raising the prices of essential goods and commodities to absurd levels thus leading to immense suffering of the common people.

As such, AMSU has decided to launch inspection drive against such unethical practices, he informed.
He continued that during the drive, many shops were found without proper price list while others did maintain price list.
The volunteers gave stern warnings to the shopkeepers who did not have proper price list, to rectify their mistake at the earliest.
AMSU will take up necessary actions if the shopkeepers decide not to heed the warning, he cautioned.
On the other hand, he urged the Government and the authorities concerned to look into the matter instead of turning a blind eye to the situation.
He informed that garlic, which used to cost around Rs 40/kg in the past, now sells for around Rs 100/kg in the market and around Rs 120-130/kg in other areas.
Potatoes (which used to cost Rs 20-25/kg in the past) now costs around Rs 60-70/kg.Demanding the unreasonable pricing to be stopped immediately, Athouba said that failure to do so will result in AMSU taking up various drastic steps, including closing down of the shops concerned.
