Imphal, May 27 2021:
All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) has drawn the attention of the government towards the plight of landless poor daily wagers, who are putting up rented quarters and left with no source of livelihood owing to the prolonged lockdown and curfew imposed for containing Covid-19.In a release, AMUCO assistant general secretary MM Thambou stated that daily wagers who were already struggling for survival have been hit hard by the lengthy lock-down and curfew with many of them now on the brink of starvation as they do not have any means for earning income.
As a consequence of the present distressful situation, these impoverished people may be compelled to defy the curfew in search of two square meals a day, the secretary said and observed that in such a scenario the preventive measures being taken up by the government against Covid-19 might be fruitless.
AMUCO, thus, urged the government to take this matter seriously and make arrangements for supplying food to the needy daily wagers, while also appealing to the public to support people who are in need in their locality.
Meanwhile, AMUCO distributed' edibles and face masks to rickshaw pullers living in rented houses at Kwakeithel, while a team led by AMUCO president Pheiroijam Nando Luwang and EKTA Parishad Manipur activists Sinam Taniya Chanu and Aribam Bidyarani Devi provided edibles, medicines and face masks to 220 landless people at Andro, Huikap, Keirao, Wakha, Tellpu Chana, Phayeng, Mayanglangjing, Loitang Khunou, Keingam, Maharabi and Mongjam, the release further said.
