Imphal, April 17 2012:
Notwithstanding the crucial role being played by Langol Reserved Forest in balancing the climatic conditions of Imphal city, many individuals have been felling trees from the reserved forest area at their own sweet will without any objection from the authorities concerned.
Langol Reserved Forest has been already caught in different disturbing issues after its land was encroached upon by private individuals and villages founded within its area.
In the meantime, some people have been continuously felling trees from the reserved forest area not only for home use but also for commercial purposes.
At first glance, one would think that the trees fell at the impact of strong and violent storms.
But on closer examination, one would see deep cuts made by axe at the lower portions of the trunks.
Sometimes, fires were burnt at the feet of the majestic pine trees making the trees half-dead.
These half-dead trees fall when there is any storm or when a strong wind blows.
When department officials came across these fallen trees, they would take away the wood.
And other trees which did not catch the eyes of department officials fell in the hands of private individuals.
Stumps of the fallen pine trees are again chopped down up to the roots to make firewood.
The same practice is still carried on extensively.
During a field trip to Langol Reserved Forest, this reporter came across two barking deers.
According to Conservator of Forest (Central Circle) L Mohindro, Langol Reserved Forest is the lung of Imphal city.
Burning or felling trees from the reserved forest cause adverse impacts on the climatic conditions of Imphal city.
He appealed to all the people to stop felling trees from the reserved forest area and cooperate in preserving the forest area.
