Ukhrul Police cracks Gandh's statue case

Ukhrul, April 17 2012:
Police on Tuesday cracked the sensational case of 'beheading Gandhiji's statue' along with apprehending four persons, who have reportedly admitted to the crime.
The four accused identified as Ngayaimi Mashanao (20), s/o Suisa Mashanao of Lunghar village; Ringmayo Mawon (19), s/o Shimaso Mawon of Chingai village; Shinmi Haorei (24), s/o Kanrei Haorei of Khamasom Wallelly and AS Ngampam (22), s/o Ramshing of Maileng village, were produced in the court of CJM Ukhrul this afternoon.
Ukhrul SP K Kabib said the four were nabbed from Imphal and have confessed to have committed the crime, while one more accused is still evading arrest.
After being produced in the court of CJM Ukhrul, all the four accused have been remanded to 11 days in police custody.
"The effort is on to nab the absconding person�and we will definitely do it," the SP assured.
Kabib also asserted that the head of Gandhi's statue, which is still missing, and the object used in vandalism would be recovered at the earliest.
On Monday, a team of Police led by Ukhrul SDPO rushed to Imphal to arrest the four persons, who reportedly left Ukhrul and were taking shelter in the state capital.
It was informed that the four were listed as suspects among few others and despite restraining them from leaving their houses, they defied police instruction.
The accused are all residents of Phungreitang West in Ukhrul town.
Incidentally, two logo plates of MGNREGS erected in Phungreitang West were also damaged the same night.
However, Police stated that the accused confessed of not having any link with the MGNREGS's election held recently in the locality.
Police have slapped a case against the four arrested persons under IPC 426, 427, 447 and 506 under section 3 of PDPP and may face a jail term upto maximum 2 years if found guilty under the Act.
Ironically, among the four accused AS Ngampam is a VDF personnel (VDF No.105216) and he has been dismissed from service with immediate effect on Tuesday.
Ngayaimi Mashanao is also a son of Head Clerk (Suisa Mashanao) in Ukhrul Police Headquarters.
After the incident of "beheading Gandhiji's statue" on the fateful intervening night of April 14 and 15, Kabib said three police teams were set up under SDPO Ukhrul, SDPO Phungyar and OC Ukhrul and initiated a watch on the listed suspects.
In two days time, the police were able to crack the sensational case and arrest the accused that have committed the shameless act that have hurt the sentiments of billions across the globe.
