Manipur today celebrated the National Press Day where the Manipur State Journalists' Awards were distributed by Chief Minister O Ibobi to eight journalists including Editor of the Naharolgi Thoudang, Khoirom Loyalakpa during a function held at Manipur Press Club.
Education /CAF &PD Minister M Okendro and AMWJU president Wangkhemcha Shamjai were president and guest of honour of the function.
Speaking on the occasion, O Ibobi Singh highlighted the importance of media in a State like Manipur and assured the gathering the necessary actions would be taken up for the welfare of the media fraternity including Press Housing colony and welfare programmes for the senior journalists.

He also hailed the role of media towards safeguarding the integrity of the Nation.
The other seven journalists who received the Manipur State Journalists Awards are Angom Ranjit (Reporting on Art and Culture), Laishram Keshonanda (Science & Technology Reporting), Sorensangbam Sonia (Parliamentary Reporting), all three from the Poknapham, Wangkhem Rishikesh, Sports Journalist of Hueiyen Lanpao (Sports Reporting), Mutum Rameshchandra of Hueiyen Lanpao (reporting on Public Health and Hygiene), N Gyanand of Hueiyen Lanpao (Rural Reporting) and Ashem Babycha (Reporting for Women and Child) from the same daily.
Each award carries a cash prize of Rs 25,000 each along with a shawl and a citation.
Though the Manipur State Journalists Award was given only to the editors annually with a cash prize of Rs 5,000, the Directorate of Information and Public Relations has been giving away the Manipur State Journalists Award for other categories since 2008 with a cash prize of Rs 25,000 each.
The first Manipur State Journalists Award was given away in 1994 .
Dr Aribam Ibomcha Sharma, News Editor & Head of Regional News Unit, All India Radio, Imphal and Shri Brozendro Ningomba, Editor in Chief, ISTV present their papers on "The Impact and Import of Cartooning and Caricature as a Medium of Expression of Opinion" which was moderated by Shri M.Saratchandra Singh, Sr.
PRO, Manipur University.
In his welcome address, DIPR Director Somorjit Salam said that Imphal would host a convention of the Press Council of India in December.
