Consultation on Pabram HEP cum 2-days Organic Farming Training held in Tamenglong

Tamenglong, November 16 2015: A Consultation and Awareness Program on Pabram Hydro Electric Project (HEP) cum 2-days Organic Farming Training Programme was held at Lower Dikiuram village of Tamenglong district.

The programme was jointly organized by Peace Core Team, Manipur (PCTM), Liangmai Naga Baptist Association (M) and Liangmai Naga Council (M) with Henry Martin Institute (HMI), Hyderabad funding the expenses of the 3-days Awareness cum Training program and also bringing resources for the programme.

Miss Aram Pamei of PCTM, P.Ramesh of HMI, Hyderabad and M.Egambaram, Organic Farming trainer from Tamil Nadu were the resource persons.

According to Enoch Newmei, General Secretary, Liangmai Naga Council the consultation and awareness on Pabram Hydro Electric Project has resolved to ban the Pabram Hydro Electric Project as the concerned department failed to take the consent of the local people nor informed the local people.

"Proper DPR, EIA, SIA and GIA should be done and the findings should be shared with the people prior to any commencement of project, Enoch Newmei said.

The affected people condemned the inconsiderate and irresponsible attitude of the Electricity Department, Manipur and North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) for signing the memorandum for construction of the proposed Hydel project on August 28, 2014 without prior detailed information or consent of the people.

There were altogether 90 participants for the Awareness Program on Pabram HEP.

The awareness program was attended from all the villages in the Barak valley and the frontal organizations such as Liangmai Naga Baptist Association, Liangmai Naga Council-Manipur, Liangmai Council (Nagaland), Liangmai Naga Katinah Ruangdi and Tamei Head Quarter Students' Union.

The leaders vowed to stand united and never allow others to usurp their land against the wishes of the common people.

The 122 metres high Pabram Hydro Electric Project over Barak river promoted by the Electricity Department, Manipur spells disaster and depict the irresponsibility and utter disrespect to the right to peaceful existence of the peace loving tribal community of Liangmai and Zeme Nagas living in the Barak valley who would be affected if the dam is constructed, said a source.

It is feared that a total of 19 villages would be affected if the program is implemented, namely- Luangdi Pabram, Ndai (Taipram), Pheluang, Nheng (Langpram), Taningjam, Nium, Jeng-mpa, Magulong, Lower and Middle Katang, Lower and Upper Dikiuram, Canaanram(Nagaland), Ntuma(Nagaland), Konphung, Rianglong, Nreng, Njao (Nagaland), and Biu-Tapon (Nagaland) .
