Imphal, August 27 2015:
Befitting tributes were paid today to the students who were killed in the course of mass protest movement against artificial famine that broke out in Manipur in 1965 .
After paying floral tributes at the tomb of the student martyrs at Pishum Chingamacha, a large group of people took out a short procession up to the complex of nearby Manipur College where the main commemorative function was held.
Former AMSU president L Saratchandra, AMSU president S Subhashchandra, MU Associate Professor L Gojendro and NESO secretary general S Prakash were seated on the dais as presidium members.

Addressing the 50th Hunger Marchers' Day function, L Saratchandra said that Manipur today is facing a situation similar to the artificial famine witnessed in the State 50 years back.
Non-local people have taken control of the State's economy on account of the Government's failure to check incessant influx in time.
He underscored the importance of unity among the indigenous people of Manipur in order to face all the challenges collectively.
Since the past many decades, students of Manipur have been taking pro-active roles in different issues of the State.
The same legacy should be carried forward and future generation of students should also take pro-active roles in the collective efforts to make Manipur a progressive State, Saratchandra said.
S Subhashchandra highlighted the importance of nurturing a healthy work culture so as to make Manipur self-reliant economically.
Rather than treating the Hunger Marchers' Day as one of the many historical events, it should be seen as a constant reminder to all the people to stand united in order to prevent recurrence of artificial famine in the State, L Gojendro said.
S Prakash said that the historic Hunger Marchers' Day should serve as a stepping stone towards making Manipur self-reliant in food grains.
Its time to introspect how the non-local traders took control of the State's economy which was once self-reliant, he asserted.
The Government of India's alleged discriminatory outlook towards Manipur has been abetting incessant influx of non-local people into the State, said another speaker.
To bring about a united and progressive Manipur, all the people need to struggle collectively rather than choosing different paths dictated by communal and parochial outlooks.
The gathering also observed silence for one minute in honour of the departed soul of Sapam Robinhood who was killed in the course of public agitation for enforcement of ILPS or similar mechanism in Manipur.
He further accused the Government of India of consistently conspiring to create divisions and distrust among different communities of Manipur.
