A combined team of Imphal West district police commandos and troops of 12 Maratha Light infantry busted a makeshift camp of the proscribed UNLF during a search operation at Khordak last evening and recovered three AK series rifles and a shot-gun.
speaking to newspersons at the commando Complex here today, Assistant Superintendent of Police (IW) LM Haokip, who is also the GO of district police Commando, said the joint cordon and search operation was launched based on disclosures by six UNLF cadres apprehended in the last few hours.
Sharing details, LM Haokip said commando teams were deployed at Johnstone Higher Secondary School area yesterday after specific information that a joint meeting of the outfit's finance group was scheduled there.
From near the northern gate of the School two persons, including an Assistant RO of the UNLF's Imphal west unit were rounded up, the commando officer said identifying the ARO as Naorem Kiran alias Sekhar (29) s/o n Iboyaima of Mayang Imphal Konchak Makha Leikai, who was staying in a house on the western side of 2nd MR campus.
The other captive, according to LM Haokip, is rifleman of the 4th Bn IRB namely Ningthoujam Helendro (29) s/o sanayai of Heirok Pt-II Bazar.
Helendro is informed to be a judo and attached to 2nd MR.In addition to recovery of a nokia mobile handset and an identity card issued by the Police Department from them, the duo reportedly revealed identities of two prominent UNLF activists involved in collection of fund and sending them to the outfit's top leaders.
Identifying the latter pair, apprehended from their respective homes, as Khaidem Romen (29) s/o Krishna from Laphupat Tera Litan makhong but staying at rented quarter in thangmeiband area and Asem Nilakanta alias Ingo alias Yaiphaba (29) s/o Amuyaima of Langdum Awang Leikai, the ASP maintained further adding that two more UNLF sympathisers were hauled up from near the western gate of 2nd MR on the same evening.
Those picked up from near the MR Gate have been identified as Elangbam Ratankumar (28) s/o Kumar of Hiyanglam Mayai Leikai and Heisnam Romio (22) s/o Biragopal of Laphupat Tera Hiyangkhong.
LM Haokip further informed of Kiran alias Sekhar disclosing that shelter provider of UNLF cadres namely Deban Singh (32) of Khordak mayai Leikai also caches weapons belonging to the armed outfit.
Consequently, Deban's revelation led to the joint security team raiding the UNLF's make-shift camp and recovering three AK-56 rifles, one double-barrel shot-gun, one battery inverter, a solar panel, 170 AK series projectiles, 10 shot-gun rounds and a large vessel, the Additional SP further said.
