Imphal, December 20 2009:
Coupled with the non-functional street lamps, absence of retro-reflective signs on road medians dividing major roads, State highways and National highways have been aiding' cases of road accidents at night.
Installation of retro-reflective signs at median ends should be done by Public Works Department.
For this, the State Government sent a proposal of Rs two crores to the Ministry of Surface Transport and Highways.
But the Ministry kept the proposal in abeyance asking the State Government to improve road conditions first.

Nevertheless, the State Government has been considering to procure retro-reflective signs at its own expense, said a source in PWD.
Taking serious note of the rising cases of road accidents at night due to absence retro-reflective signs on road medians, one A Sobha, a Tata Magic driver operating between Imphal and Bishnupur, observed that on many occasions drivers could not see medians as most of the street lamps were not working.
At times, when drivers could not see medians and sense its presence, they drove or rammed their vehicles on the medians resulting in fatal casualties, Sobha said.
"It would be a most welcome step if the Government install retro-reflective signs at median-ends to make its presence known to drivers", he said.
He further opined that majority of road accidents caused by hitting or running over road medians were not because of rash driving under influence of alcohol or drug but more because of the inability to see or sense presence of road medians.
