Imphal, October 19 2011:
A newly born infant who was under-going treatment in JNIMS children ward has been handed over to Social Welfare Department.
The infant abandoned in Lamphel area was picked up by a team of Lamphel Police at about 9.30 am of October 11 and brought to JNIMS.
The infant suspected to have been abandoned within 48 hours of birth at a bushy spot was given full treatment at infant care unit of JNIMS children ward before the hospital's head of paediatrics department Dr Chourajit handed over the kid to Social Welfare Director G Satyabati.
Meanwhile G Satyabati has lauded the Lamphel Police team for their humanitarian act of picking up the abandoned baby and bringing it to JNIMS.
She also conveyed gratitude to doctors, nurses and staff of JNIMS children ward.
She further appealed to all parents not to abandon kids in isolated places and asked them to hand over babies to nearest police stations or Social Welfare Department or Child Welfare Committees if they are not in a position to bring up the kids.
The Social Welfare Director also appealed to all the people to inform police, hospitals, Social Welfare Department or Child Line on 1098 if they come across any abandoned or way lost child.
She further advised all parents who want to adopt children to follow legal procedures.
Dr Chourajit said that health condition of the abandoned kid has
improved remarkably.
When it was brought to the hospital, the baby was suffering from hypothermia caused by insect bites.
Saying that certain parts of the baby's limbs were missing at the time of birth which is known as phocomelia in medical terminology, Dr Chourajit said that this was no point of concern as such deformities can be corrected when the child has grown up.
Since last year, around five abandoned kids have been successfully treated in JNIMS.
These kids were taken by people who wanted to adopt them.
Social Welfare Department later handed over the kid to Shishu Gih children home, Imphal East.
